Description

Scenario 1:Anthony Two issues described in this scenario are food insecurity and poor/lack of hygiene along with many other issues. As his teacher I would first address his food insecurity. By getting into contact with Anthony’s counselor and administration if needed we could get him set up with free or reduced lunch. This would help address some of the behavioral issues that he has going on. His counselor can also get him a care package. Supplying him clothing and personal hygiene products so that we can work on him improving his hygiene. We can also provide services where he can go to shower and get other services if needed. By bringing his lack of food and hygiene up to his counselor we can also refer him out to services to address any social/emotional impact that has had on him. I would also talk to him in a non-judgmental way, I would make sure that I show him that I care and will try my best to help him. Due to the nature of his home life I would suggest the counselor be the first to reach out to the his mother and if possible set up an appointment for a conference to discuss how the school can help Anthony. As a teacher I would be a mandatory reporter, this would impact my obligation of reporting his situation due to the abuse and or neglect happening. Due to the sensitive nature of the student’s issues I would make sure that I do not talk to him about my concerns in front of any other students. I also would make sure he knows that everything he tells me about his issues will be kept confidential and will not become known to other students. Anthony’s home life is problematic, and in this situation, I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to reach out to his mother. I would allow his counselor and or the administration reach out to her and explain some of the things we are seeing in school. The counselor can reach out explain what we are seeing at school and offer services for the family. If she is not receptive then we can proceed to offer as many services as we can during school hours. This is a sensitive topic and due to the drug use and or report made to Child Protective Service

(CPS) she may not want to receive any help from the school. The best we can do is advocate for Anthony and try to get him as much help as we can with the resource at school. If mom is okay with receiving help from the school, we can refer her to resources and or contacts that the counselor may have to get her information on rehab and family counseling. Stakeholders in this situation would be the school counselors, principal/vice principal, CPS and the different resource programs they get referred to. By collaborating to come up with a plan we can make sure that we are meeting all of Anthony’s needs and improving his overall function at school....
