Task 7.b. Applied Learning | San Diego Zoo Case Analysis

This case is very interesting and does involve many factors. We are looking at the American and China relationship and to procurement of two giant pandas for the San Diego Zoo. First, we have to look at the factors that may influence Chinas choice and what the US can do to get pandas to their zoo. With being said we will jump into the goals and possible conflicts that may arise. The goal for the US is to be able to have giant panda in the US. To be most specific to be able to have them back in the San Diego zoo once again. The Panda attract a lot of attention to the zoo and creates a lot of buzz and excitement. For china they view things a little bit differently. China knows that these pandas are more of a rare animal and there is not that many of them left around the world. With that being said they are very specific as to who and where these pandas go to. They would only let 15 countries host these animals, and it was only for very short visits. So, China will take a bit convincing in order to get pandas back. With these factors being brought up, this may cause some issues to arise. The first issue that may arise is that china might think we cannot take care of them properly. If you look at the San Diego zoo, we have had a hard time with budget and affording to have proper care for the animals. Also, china is very selective as I said previously, they might not want pandas at that certain zoo and just refuse to send them there. As of right now the US and China do have a good relationship. The have developed a good relationship by though contacts of one of its trustees. The US also has a history of helping

with endangered animals in China. So, based on these reasons I think this would help the negotiations between china and the US. So, we are on the lower end of the power position in this negotiation. With that being said the US needs to have a plan set to be able to convince China to allow us to have pandas. First, we need to look at the other party and their viewpoints. Once we do that we need to go over the issues of funding and being able to properly take care of the animals. Then we must address the social context of this negotiation, as well as define the interests of china. Once we do that we can define our negotiation goals. Look at what we want to get out of this negotiation. Also, to look at what China would want on their end to make the negotiation smoother and both sides to be happy. Knowing alternative and limits is also a good way to draw the line on certain things like how many pandas we would like to have. As well has how much china has been willing to give us. The final and most important thing is to be able to get good numbers and prices. The numbers need to be fair on both sides. Once these numbers have been hashed out the process will be come much smoother. Our BATNA is looking at what we want which is pandas at the zoo. If negotiations don’t work out we need to find a way to have mutual gains. We will try and convince them why we are a top zoon and why they shouldn’t need to worry about us not being able to handle them. Also, we could offer more help on trying to preserve the panda population in return. This would be one of our solutions to the issue. The whole problem was being able to let china know we deserved to have pandas and could take care of them. With this we can show that we care about the pandas and want the population to remain and continue to grow.

In conclusion China and the US do have a good relationship to begin with when It comes to the animals. With this being said the US and China coming to an agreement will be good for both sides. We also have a common want and that is for the pandas to be safe and enjoyed by people all around the world....
