Mary Smith Teach Us All Video response 1. How did the film make you feel about education in America? I knew a bit about the issues with educational equity in America, however, the film opened my eyes to how large the problem was. I was raised in a wealthy area compared to the rest of the country and as a result, I benefited where other students did not. The film bothered me because I was lucky to be born where I was and receive the education I did, but not everyone is afforded that luxury.

2. What was your prior knowledge of the Little Rock school crisis? I learned about the Little Rock 9 and what occurred during the civil rights movement, however, I did not learn how dark and sad the situation was. My history classes painted the integration far nicer than what occurred.

3. What is the motivating factor for such high rates of school segregation in NYC? It seems that the student’s ability to apply to their schools of choice creates a division between poor and wealthy students, which is extremely related to race. White and wealthy students were preferred in the application process and as a result, black students were clumped together and left with a second-rate education.

4. Triple segregation affects students profoundly by limiting their exposure to immersion English language experiences, racial diversity, and coursework keeping up with traditional classes when assigned to ESL classes. How can families and students contribute to equal school experiences? Families and students can get involved in the political process by protesting, writing to their representatives and pushing for the education they deserve. However, this may be difficult for those that have a language barrier to overcome.

5. Are there examples, ideas, and/or strategies you can share from your own experience or someone you know that have been successful or unsuccessful in fighting for education equity?

I have no experience with fighting for education equity, but I am always an advocate for becoming politically involved and making your voice heard. The student’s in New York seemed to do this very well when they assembled a council of students from many districts....
