How to structure your Written Debate (individual assessment) Introduction
Briefly introduce the topic, what are some current views surrounding it, and state whether your argument is in favour of or against the issue.
Main Points
Develop around three points in support of your stance on the topic statement. As you have a limited word count, you will need to choose each point carefully. You may include sub-headings in this section to ‘highlight’ each of your points.
Rebuttal/Response
In this section, you are required to negate (i.e., respond to) at least one of your opponents’ points (i.e., your ‘opponents’ will be the members of your group who have been assigned the alternate stance on the topic).
Summation
Briefly conclude your argument by reiterating your stance (and highlighting your strongest point/s). Synthesize your concluding statement clearly and intelligently.
General Guidelines
Your arguments must be supported by research literature and empirical findings from journal articles (more details and tips in your UILG). Use full sentences (i.e., do not use dot-points), and APA style citations and referencing. You should include a Reference List (this will not be included in the word count). Please note the word limit (see UILG). Once the limit is reached, reading will stop. The section within the word limit will be marked as if it is the complete assignment. NO leeway will be given above this limit. More tips and formative support in your tutorials...
