WHAT IS ART
Definitions: What is art? Communicative (within context) material/ideas/sensation by visual means Why we value art? It has the power to tell us something important about ourselves, to confront us with ideas, & feeling about the human condition we recognize as tru, but may otherwise struggle to understand fully Medium/media: the material on or from which an artist chooses to make a work of art
European traders bartered alcohol for African goods. Slaves were shipped from Ghana to the sugar plantations o the Caribbean, then in turn, rum was shipped from there back to Africa The art piece is made up of discarded liquor bottle tops, thus reminds us of the slave trade and highlighting the way in which modern consumerism discards waste Artist also uses traditional designs suggesting the empowerment and fragility of the Ghanaian culture

Form: an object that can be defined in 3-d; height, width and depth Cast: a sculpture or artwork made by pouring a liquid into a mold Monumental: having massive or impressive scale
