QUESTION 1 a)

Maintenance can be defined as any activities performed to ensure that the equipment and machines can perform at optimum condition. Maintenance can be divided into two types. Preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance. Define corrective maintenance and give two examples of preventive and corrective maintenance for chain & sprocket drive. (5 marks)

b)

Sketch and explain the different between DC shunt motor and DC compound motor. Give one application for both types of DC motors. (5 marks)

QUESTION 2 A boiler is a closed vessel in which fluid (generally water) is heated up to high-pressure steam. The boilers are used in power plants, for the generation of steam. They are mostly used in power plants where steam turbines are used for the generation of electricity. a) As shown in Figure 1, name the type of Boiler A and Boiler B. b) Explain THREE (3) different between Boiler A and Boiler B. c) Discuss TWO (2) disadvantages of Boiler A and Boiler B respectively. (10 marks)

Describe the difference between a single acting linear actuator and double acting linear actuator. (2marks)

Discuss general preventive maintenance for the air compressor used in the workshop especially during and after running condition. (4marks)

Ducting is one of the main parts for mechanical ventilation. Based on your understanding, predict TWO (2) types of preventive maintenance required for the ducting. (2 marks)

b)

There are three types of air ventilation which are natural, mechanical, and hybrid system. An industry like liquid chemical production releases odor and hazardous contaminants. As per statement, choose the appropriate air ventilation system to ensure the safety of worker. Then, explain how the air ventilation system selected can provide safety working environment. (2 marks)

c)

Sketch how local exhaust system is being operated with complete diagram and label. (4 marks)

d)

Figure below shows the floor plan of ROOM A sizes of 12 ft. x 8 ft. To improve air ventilation in this room, mechanical component is required. The air is supplied from Window 1 and exhausted at Window 2. Based on that requirement, sketch and label the required mechanical component at the floor plan.
