TESTING OF CRANIAL NERVES
CN I Olfactory: Lemon oil, coffee CN II Optic: Visual acuity should be tested with and without corrective lenses CN III Occulomotor/ CN IV Trochlear/ CN VI Abducens: Examine pupil, size, regularity and equality. Test reaction to light and accommodation (CN III). Look for strabismus, nystagmus (lateral or vertical). Movement of eyeball. CN V Trigeminal: Open/close jaw against resistance. Tapping lightly over chin (reflex jaw closure) CN VII Facial: Examine for facial asymmetries at rest. Then with facial movements. CN VIII Auditory (Vestibulocochlear): Whisper a number in each ear and make patient repeat. CN IX Glossopharyngeal/CN X Vagus: Have patient say “AHH”, look with light/tongue depressor for palate elevated, symmetry with phonation and gag reflex. CN XI Spinal Accessory: MMT -> SCM and Trapezius muscles. CN XII Hypoglossal: Ask patient to protrude the tongue....
