Oral Tradition Before we begin the novel, it is important that we understand the importance that the Igbo place on their oral (spoken) tradition. This means that they pass down cultural and historical traditions and information from generation to generation by telling stories. Children would grow up listening to stories about religion, traditions, rituals, history, and life lessons. They would learn them by heart and tell them to others, passing them on.

Igbo people took great pride in being skilled at speaking, communicating, and storytelling. They also place great importance on proverbs and use them often in conversation. A proverb is a short, common saying that gives truth, advice, or wisdom. Some examples are:  Actions speak louder than words.  All good things must come to an end.  An apple a day keeps the doctor away.  A picture is worth a thousand words.
