Description

That Lean and Hungry Look” – Suzanne Britt Jordan Julius Caesar stated “Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look; he thinks too much; such men are dangerous.” Cassius’ “lean and hungry look” unsettled Julius Caesar, who preferred the company of fat, contented men whom he believed were more trustworthy and appreciative. The goal of this short article is to entertain while also demonstrating Britt's viewpoint on how thin people vary from overweight ones. Britt's target demographic is overweight people. I don't think she cares whether thin people read her piece; she's writing to entertain big people and perhaps make them feel better about themselves. Pathos, comedy, repetition, comparison and contrast, and cause and effect were among the rhetorical methods she employed. Britt explains why slim people are the way they are in her essay by using cause and effect. “Thin people turn surly, mean and hard at a young age because they never learn the value of a hot fudge sundae for easing tension," she writes, as an example. Thin people become cruel as a result of not being taught at an early age that comfort foods might help them cope with stress. I like how she uses repetition to enhance her work because reading the many words to describe thin people, such as "briskly, dull, probe, bony, crunchy," and fat ones, such as "guffaw, goodly, generous, jiggly," really helps me visualize what she's talking about....
