Kensha’ Secrease Professor Booker The 120 16 October 2016 Specific purpose: Inform the audience about the history, improvements, and benefits of majorette dance. Central idea: Majorette dance was initially created to be associated with marching bands during parades.

It is often confused with cheerleading, but it includes much more. It started off as dance only accompanied with drumlines. It has went through many improvements over the years. It benefits many young girls including myself. Through dance I was able to express myself, my coach was a role model and now I coach my own team.

History a. The older meaning of majorette: “group of girls who wear a uniform and twirl or throw a baton in synchronized motions.” b. They were also known as female drum majors and feminine drum majorettes c. HBCUs hold championships for the majorette dancelines. d. In present hip-hop majorette is the most popular: This dance style incorporates hip-hop, ballet, jazz, and lyrical as they perform, battle, and compete.

Improvements a. Present day majorette teams now participate in stand battles. Two teams go back and forth with intense choreography until the judged declare a winner. You could compare it to a boxing match. b. Television: The show Bring It displays some majorette. Teams participate in competitions and stand battles. Team showcase their best moves with sass. c. Teams also have dropped the batons and flags. Now teams use bucking, death drops, and illusions.

IV.

Benefits a. Sisterhood: Dancers have to sign contracts, follow competition rules, and obey codes of conduct. Teams create life long friends. b. Many women who participated in majorette dance while in college own their own businesses, have wonderful jobs, coach their own teams and more c. I created my own majorette dance line at Teach Academy of Technology.

Ultimately a . Do not sleep on majorette dance. People should not say dance is not a sport. They train and compete just like any other teams. b. It is “high energy and high speed.” If you ever have the opportunity to witness you will agree that it is fun, energetic, and entertaining. c. Majorette dance has developed over the years and continues to push young girls and women forward in their lives....
