The Buddha of Suburbia The Plot Part 1 : In the Suburbs Chapter 1 Introduces his immediate family + Eva + Charlie. Evening at Eva’s. Haroon has sex with Eva, Karim has sex with Charlie. The Great Sulk. Chapter 2 Introduces Anwar, Princess Jeeta, Jamila, Helen. Haroon’s background and arrival in England. Contrast between Anwar and Haroon. How Haroon met Margaret. Evening at Carl and Marianne’s. Uncle Ted and Auntie Jean walk in. Chapter 3 Introduces Uncle Ted and Auntie Jean (Gin and Tonic) Drops by Helen’s, incident with Helen’s father and the Great Dane. Karim is summoned at Ted and Jean’s. Spurs incident. Jean asks Karim to put an end to the Buddha business and the affair with Eva. Chapter 4 No Eva for some time. Ted comes over, starts repairing Haroon’s record player, and breaks down. Next Saturday, Karim goes to Anwar’s (Paradise Stores). Long talk with Jamila. Her personality. Digression about being bisexual and about racial tension. Jamila tells Karim about the arranged marriage. Anwar’s hunger strike (8th day). Chapter 5 Loves drinking tea and cycling around. Failing school, taking speed, listening to music, sleeplessness. violence and racism at school. Sees his dad calling from a phone booth. They talk about Eva (in love with her). The Fish (Charlie’s manager). Helen + Jamila + Karim consult Haroon about Jamila’s predicament. (after falling asleep)Advises to follow her instinct and seek happiness. Helen and Karim walk Jamila her home, she says she’s made her decision but doesn’t say what it is. Karim and Helen have sex. Chapter 6 Changez’s arrival. Party at Anwar’s. Changez not interested in the store. Karim drives off with Haroon and Eva (long description of Eva’s face and character, in a positive way). Haroon tells Karim he has decided to live with Eva. Karim calls Auntie Jean. Chapter 7 Break up scene. Allie goes with Margaret to live at Ted and Jean’s, Karim moves in with Eva, Haroon and Charlie. Goes to a new college (co-ed) but drops out. Karim corrupts Changez. Karim visits his mum at Jean’s. Chapter 8 Haroon and Eva redecorate Eva’s house with the help of Ted and Karim. Karim gets hired as a roadie for Charlie’s band but offends him by saying he’s not talented. The end of Part 1.

Part 2 : In the City Chapter 9 The flat in West Kensington (dilapidated, shabby but great neighborhood, in-between upper-class Kensington and lower-class Earls Court). Nearby pub : the Nashville. The concert. Punk kids. Charlie has an epiphany. Eva starts redecorating the flat. Throws a flat-warming party (her ‘launch into London’). Invites many of Shadwell’s acquaintances but virtually none of theirs (only 2 pp from the meditation group.),+ Jamila, Changez, and Shinko. Talks with Shadwell, auditions at Shadwell’s theatre in North London. The Jungle Book, Shadwell speaking in Urdu or Punjabi. Gives him the role of Mowgli. Chapter 10 Summer + fall. Charlie’s break through. Karim waits for rehearsals to start. Moves back into their old house in South London with his mum (Allie in Italy). Margaret transforms the house, Ted brings plants and things. Karim goes back to Haroon and Eva’s to start rehearsal. Introduces people from the cast (Terry the trotskyite). Clashes with Shadwell over the costume, then over the Indian accent. Talks with Terry about the working class. Eva’s assault on London. Drops the Buddha business, works her way up into London society. Karim walks in on Charlie wearing a swastika and talking sharply to Eva. Karim and Eva go to Charlie’s concert (the Condemned). Riot. Inspires Karim (ambition). Dress rehearsal + preview, but lights crash onto the stage. Margaret, Ted and Jean come to the final preview. Dinner + night club. Opening : Haroon disgusted, Jamila outraged (‘neofascist’) Eva has a row with Shadwell. Play works well. Theatre director Matthew Pyke sees it and offers Karim a part (although Terry thought it would be him). Lets Shadwell (and Molière) down, who takes it very badly. Chapter 11 Spring. Final show with Shadwell, starts working with Pyke in Chelsea. Describes Pyke’s method and introduces the other actors of the group. Starts researching for his character. Visits Anwar and Jeeta. Anwar has gone mad, goes on walks with his stick, starts going to the mosque, wants to go home to Bombay but Jeeta won’t go. His courtship of Eleanor (lives in Ladbroke Grove / Notting Hill) Eleanor’s background : upper-class. Self-loathing. Karim’s rivalry with Heater (Scottish roadsweeper). Realises how ignorant he is as he kisses Eleanor for the first time. Talks about education and social class. Karim presents his Anwar character to the group. Tracey’s misgivings : she’s worried it might portray minorities as backward and confirm white prejudice. Has to start again. Chapter 12 Talks with Changez about basing his character on him but he refuses. Cycles to Eleanor’s, avoids Heater, finds her in tears. First moral dilemma about using Changez for his character. Start shaving sex with Eleanor (detailed description) + real love + fear of losing her. Presents his character (Tariq) to the group. Backed by Matthew who starts driving his home after rehearsal. Invites him to have sex with his wife Marlene, and slips information about Eleanor’s previous boyfriend. Karim becomes irritated by and disappointed in his father (unable to take care of himself). Jamila’s opinion on Matthew’ invitation. Chapter 13 Karim and Eleanor go to Matthew and Marlene in St John’s Wood. Matthew’s 13-year-old son is a Charlie Hero fan. Marlene fills Karim in on Gene, Eleanor’s previous boyfriend who killed himself (a victim of racism because West Indian, unrecognized actor  OD) Ends on sex orgy.

Chapter 14

No money. Few weeks’ break while Louise writes the play. Works at renovating Eva’s house with Eleanor. Eva becoming busier, more efficient. Karim and Eleanor go to the theater a lot. Jeeta’s revenge on Anwar. Attacks Changez who knocks him unconscious with a dildo, dies of a heart attack. After the funeral, Jamila announces to Karim and Changez she’s leaving the flat to live in a commune. Changez tags along. Karim helps them settle in and works on the creation of Changez / Tariq. Frightened (a few weeks left until opening). Chapter 15 (eventful, intense chapter) Starts rehearsals, then goes north with the other actors to tour the play. Tension with Carol. Visits Changez at the new place, finds a new man. Accepted by the ‘vegetarians’, makes himself useful, but unhappy because Jamila sleeps with Simon in the next room. Karim swears again he’s not using his character. Changez gets assaulted by fascists under a bridge. Jamila organises a march against racism. Eleanor comes up with excuses not to go to the march. Karim catches her going to Pyke’s instead. Decides to break up with her. Numbed, bored by theater people. Opening night a triumph. Finds his mom and dad talking to each other in the foyer. Terry demands he ask money for the Party from Pyke and Eleanor. Runs into Changez, who announces that Jamily is pregnant by Simon. Simon’s face is bandaged, Jamila is angry at Karim for not showing up at the demonstration. Karim leaves the theater (gloomy and resentful). Followed by a woman named Hilary. Heater shows up, they fight (razor blades in his lapels). Chapter 16 The play is a success. Offer from a NY theater. Karim visits Pyke to ask him for money (insistent Marlene) (£500 cheque). Asks Eleanor, she refuses (thinks about Gene, says it’s not a party for blacks). Brings the money to Terry in Brixton. Exasperated by Terry’s opinion of America and by people who don’t know what they’re talking about (I hated the flood of opinion, the certainty, the easy talk about Cuba and Russia and the economy). Gropes Terry but no response. Leaves. ‘America was waiting.’ Chapter 17 NY hotel after the opening. Weird Haitian dance show. Pyke reads out the predictions he’d written about who would sleep with who. Karim is drunk, fights with Pyke, ends up in the back of a cab with Charlie (who lives in NY). Charlie lets him crash in his apartment (very famous in America). Karim still depressed. Charlie explores masochistic sex with Karim as a witness. This + incident with journalist  Karim decides to go home to London, against Charlie’s advice. Chapter 18 Happy to be back in London. Gets a part in a new soap opera. Half-heartedly accepts it. Visits his dad and Eva while photographers come over to look at the apartment (Eva wants to sell it and move on). Visits his mum, finds Allie, long, interesting talk. Margaret is seeing a younger man, Jimmy, and doesn’t want him to find out that she has grown-up sons. Goes to a club with Allie, goes home to the Fish’s, goes out again to visit Changez and Jamila at the commune. Baby : Leila Kollontai. Simon is away in America and Jamila is now involved with Joanna. Karim sleeps behind the couch and overhears them (Changez begging Jamila to touch him), they catch him, Changez almost attacks him. Goes to his dad and Eva’s. Haroon asks him about Margaret. Karim invites everyone to a fancy restaurant : Dad and Eva, Allie and his girlfriend, Changez and Shinko. Eva announces they’re getting married. The end....
