Topic/Objective: Unit 6 - Middle Ages Europe (500 - 1500 CE) - Middle Ages, Division of Christianity & the Crusades EQ: What are the Crusades? - A series of military campaigns led by European Christians designed to take back control of the Holy Land from Muslims (1095 - 1291 CE). - Holy Land was an area in the Middle East known as Palestine. - Considered sacred because it was the birthplace of Jesus & Christianity - Only the First & Third Crusade were successful in reclaiming parts of the Holy Land. - Age of Faith Period: Religion dominated all aspects of life from architecture, literature, art and music. - Religious duty for Christians to fight in the Holy War. - First Crusade - Christian soldiers reached Jerusalem in January of 1099 and captured the city by July 15. - Crusaders then brutally slaughters all of the city’s men, women and children. - Second Crusade - Muslims take back control of Jerusalem - Third Crusade - Christians did not take back the city but did reach a peace treaty that allowed Christian pilgrims to visit holy sites. - Impact of Crusades: Christians ultimately failed to regain the Holy Land. But Crusades led to trade in spices, food and fabrics with the East and new kinds of knowledge, such as making paper....
