2 The Death of George Floyd Do you think that excessive force is common in law enforcement today? Just by the statistics of the violent and inhumane use of force to subdue a suspect or from the blatant close-range shooting of individuals, much recently excessive force within the police force has seen tremendous notoriety. As of 2019, the police service had killed approximately one thousand and ninety-eight people. Of those killed, 24% were from the Black community. The entire of 2019 only saw twenty-seven days where the police failed to kill a person. Also, shockingly only 1% of the killings by the police service have ended up with the involved officers receiving any criminal charges (Craig, 2020). Could George Floyd’s death have been prevented? While the death of George Floyd in totality lacked validation on any grounds, it remains important to note two crucial reasons why Floyd’s death was very preventable. According to the police training manual, the permissible neck restraints required the suspect to resist arrest forcefully. Gorge Floyd was long subdued before Chauvin's knee choked him on his neck. Additionally, four police officers stood by as George continuously kept repeating the words "I cannot breathe” at least seventeen times. Immediate peer officer intervention could have been a far more effective move on restoring and preserving the legitimacy of the arrest force used by Chauvin. Instead, together with the three bystander officers, Chauvin never tried getting George Floyd upon his feet. How is it possible for Chauvin to be found guilty on three criminal counts?

3 George Floyd’s assailant, Derek Chauvin, was charged and found guilty on three criminal counts; second-degree manslaughter, second degree, and third-degree murder. Under all three counts, it was found that Chauvin’s actions directly resulted in George Floyd’s death and the applied force unreasonable. The second-degree murder conviction an established intent by Chauvin to apply unreasonable force, and the manslaughter charge was substantiated by the sheer culpable negligence proof found.
