Description

The first lines of the extract suggest us a quiet and peaceful environment, it's a warm evening in this new village and Dorian is recalling the memory of his new love interest, thus giving a positive note for the beginning. This girl is described as naive and innocent for she didn't believe Mr Gray as wicked (given that, apparently he was neither ugly nor old) and for la she possessed what Dorian oh so longed for, the unstained purity of youth. Successively, the main character, after expressing his wish for change, blames his own pride and then God for the almighty didn't punish him to make him repent of his actions. This "rage" fades into indifference as Dorian explains the deaths of Basil Hallward and Alan Campbell where he was effectively to blame, the first one is described as a moment of madness while the latter, being a suicide, doesn't weigh on his conscience for he didn't partake an active role. The only good thing he did was spare this innocent girl and for this, he thinks the portrait will show some improvement, but it won't, suggesting Mr Gray that his act of kindness had merely been vanity. After feeling indignation he considers the idea of confession but discards it soon after for he himself got rid of every evidence of the deeds he made. The servants identify the corpse only for its rings....
