Description

Comment “The Picture of Dorian Gray” The passage is taken from Oscar Wilde’s novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”.! The setting in place is Basil’s studio while the setting in time is a day of June.! There are three characters involved in the scene: Dorian, the protagonist of the novel, Basil, the painter and one of Basil’s friend and the future mentor of Dorian, Lord Henry Wotton. He is an aesthete and he’s trying to influence Dorian with his ideas of beauty and life. ! Basil has just finished his portrait and Dorian has just finished being a model because he’s stepping down from the platform and watches for the first time his portrait. ! The main themes of the text are the revelation of beauty, the idea of old age and the transformation of Dorian. ! Dorian in a first moment paid no attention to his picture but when he saw it, he’s confronted with the power of his beauty for the first time so “the sense of his own beauty came on like a revelation”! His first perception of beauty in fact is associated with the idea of the revelation of truth: there is a parallelism between beauty and truth and both are associated as something religious. Beauty is also associated to pleasure and that’s why Dorian later approaches the Hedonism and live in the pursuit of pleasure. ! Old age is associated to the decades of body so when time passes everyone decades. ! In the text there is a description of the effects of the passing of the time. This effects scare Dorian and Oscar Wilde makes use of similes to express his acute sensations: the sense of suffering is comparing to the cut of a knife. He also uses a metaphor to describe Dorian’s eyes that “deepened into amethyst”. ! At this point we assist to the transformation of Dorian who give his soul to remain young and beautiful. ! The story is told by a third person narrator, who is unobtrusive. He doesn’t express any opinion and his role is to describe what happens. ! The author makes use of dialogue, description and narration....
