The development of the representation of human emotion in art From the 1300’s to 1650’s the development of the representation of human emotion in art has changed in each time period. The theme of this essay is the development of the representation of human emotion in art. This theme will connect to the 6 painting I have chosen from each time period. The first painting is from the Late Medieval period in Italy during 13001400. Artist Giotto painted The Lamentation during 1305 and the material he used is fresco. The second painting is from the Early Italian Renaissance during 1400-1450.Fra Filippo Lippi artist of the Madonna and Child with Angels made during 1450. The material used is Tempera and the dimension of painting is 36 in by 25.0 in. The third painting is The High Renaissance and Mannerism in Italy 1450-1500.Artist Michelangelo painted The Donni Tondu during 1504-1506. The materials used are Tempera Paint and Oil paint. The dimensions of the painting are 47 1⁄2 in. The four painting is from the same time period of when Michelangelo painted the Donni Tondo.Artist Raphael painted the Madonna of the Meadows made during 1504. The material used is Oil paint and the dimension of the painting is 44 in by 35 in. The fifth painting is from the European Baroque Art in Italy, Spain, and Flanders during 1550-1600.Caravaggio painted the Judith Slaying Holofernes during 1599 the material used is Oil. The last painting is from the same time period during 1600-1650. Artemisia Gentileschi painted the Judith Slaying Holofernes during 1614-20 the material used is Oil. By using all six paintings from different time periods to see the progression of emotion in art and comparing/contrasting emotions in each painting. The first progression of emotions in art is the paintings from Giotto and Fra Fillip shows different emotions in detail. The Lamentation by Giotto shows Mary embracing her dead son, a

Orozco 2 saint holds his hand, and another saint hold his feet. The people in the scene add emotion to the death of Christ. The Lamentation depicts the day Christ dead and shows the angles, saints, and humans come together to mourn his death. Giotto fresco of the Lamentation shows emotions obviously when Mary is embracing her son. The small details Giotto added to create the scene of sadness is the angels crying and making expressions of sadness and the people surrounding Christ show sadness. In contrast to Fillip painting of Madonna, and Child with Angels it shows the emotion of playfulness. By having the Virgin Mary look like a woman and the angles look like a child with a smile makes the scene joyful. Having the angles look like children connects to being playful and happy. The children in the painting creates the emotion of playfulness. Giotto emotion of sadness and Fra Fillip emotion of playfulness is an example of emotion in art. The second progression of emotion of art is the painting from Michelangelo and Raphael show similar emotions of caring to show a depiction of a fairydom Tondu Holy family depicts the Christ child, Mary, Saint Joseph along with John the Baptist in the foreground and contains five ambiguous nude male figures in the background. As Mary and saint joseph protect and support the Christ child. The presentation of the holy family is seen as caring and loving. The same emotions are shown in Madonna of the Meadows holy family depicts the Virgin Mary, Christ Child, and Saint John the Baptist. The beauty of Mary, Christ, and Saint John the Baptist expresses their divinity. The Madonna of the Meadows shows Christ on the left standing on his mother's foot to show dependence on his mother. The depiction of the scene shows the virgin Mary supporting her Christ child and being a mother. Both paintings show how the virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are a family by the characteristic in the scene. The third progression of emotion of art is the painting from Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi shows similar emotions of violence. The subject of both paintings are Judith and

Orozco 3 Holofernes. The scene is a biblical story about a heroic woman about to behead the general Holofernes. Artemisia’s painting shows the strength, challenge, and violence Judith and her maidservant demonstrate. Violence is shown when both women are trying to put him down, blood everywhere meaning on the sheets and on themselves. Also, Holofernes trying to get up, but you can see in his face he is deeding. Just like in Caravaggio painting of Judith Slaying Holofernes shows Judith beheading Holofernes. The emotion of violence is seen when Judith is beheading Holofernes and the blood spreading everywhere. The theme of this essay is the development of the representation of human emotion in art. The emotions are sadness, playfulness, caring and violence is shown through the different time periods of each painting. The six paintings from different artists and scenes shows the emotion in art. By comparing the characteristics each painting to address the emotion of the scene.
