The Dying Girl That No One Helped Reflection Questions 1) What debate did this incident spark? This incident questions the point of view of the 38 observers and why none of them helped Kitty. 2) Why did the witnesses say they didn’t help? Be specific. They said that they did not want to become involved. They also stated that they “didn’t want to be questioned or go to court”. 3) According to the attacker, what could have happened if people had done something? The article states that the attacker said he had heard some windows go up and lights go on, so he retreated for a while and when it became quiet again, he came back to finish murdering Kitty. If people had done something, it would have never been quiet again and he wouldn’t have come back.

4) What do you think the lyrics to the song “Outside a Small Circle of Friends” is saying (particularly the last couple lines)? The lyrics “Outside of a Small Circle of Friends” is saying that if someone had helped in a situation like this one and they had done something, it probably wouldn’t matter to anyone else besides a select few.

5) How do you feel about people NOT being held accountable if a crime is occurring? Explain your opinion. I feel as if that is illegal and that is an act a coward would pursue. If a crime is being fully committed right in front of your eyes, you should have to do something. Even if this happened to me and I didn’t say anything, I feel like it would mess with me mentally the rest of my life and I would convince myself that I basically let someone die.

6) What does “pluralistic ignorance” mean? Pluralistic ignorance means that you see someone’s calm attitude and expressions and convince yourself that there is no actual emergency.

7) How do you think social media could add to this problem of being “bystanders”?

Social media allows people to see all the things other people do in their life. You cannot control anything online and what other people decide to send or post. You basically become a bystander when you are on social media because the only thing you are doing is observing what other people do....
