THE EDWARDIAN AGE When Queen Victoria died in 1901, her son EDWARD VII became King. Though his reign is short , he gave his name to an age and culture. He modernized the monarchy and brought new life and a sense of fun to a royal court that had become gloomy, in the last years of Queen Victoria. He redecorated Buckingham Palace. He also took the motor car yhat his mother hated. He received a diplomat when he signed an agreement with France called “the Entente Cordiale”. It established a mutual agreement that Britain could pursue its interest in Egypt and France in Marocco.His diplomacy helped Britain in a new alignment of European countries: Britain would count on France and Russia in any conflict with Germany, Austria or Italy. But there were similarities between Edwardian and Victorian age. There were the class distinctions the rich people and the poor people who lived in bad conditions. In 1906 the Liberals introduced some reforms regarding the poor. The Liberals were divided into two groups: those who supported the traditional liberal values of laissez- faire and those who wanted a New Liberalism. The important New Liberal was Winston Churchill. It was introduced the “Children’s Charter” that helped poor children to give them free meals in the schools. Also the old people were helped with the introduction of the old pension. In 1909 workers received minimum wages and free medical treatment and sickness benefits. This policy was called the policy of the” Welfare state “.It established the responsibility toward the poor The House of Lords, which supported the Conservative Party were in storm because they were obliged to pay increased taxes. So, the liberals decided to REFORM the HOUSE OF LORDS .In 1903 Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter founded the “ Women’s Social and Political Union”. The suffragettes were the women who fought to vote. Some of them were sent in prison but in 1908 women aged 30 and over would gain the vote . This Period was the appearance of popular newspapers: “the Times” ,”the “Daily Telegraph” and “the Daily Mail” which differed from others because it cost a little.
