Description

The Evolution of Traditional media to New Media Prehistoric Age - (Approximately 30,000 years ago). It refers to the time before the existence of written or recorded history. It is divided into two periods: The Stone Age and The Metal Age. There is no concrete system if writing during this time so people communicated through music and dance.

Earliest form of Traditional Media Petroglyphs are image created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading, as a form of rock art.

Pictographs used to refer to sketches or paintings that usually depict nature, giving us a glimpse of the early people’s way of life.

Industrial Age - It begins in the 18th Century in Great Britain. An Industrial city pertains to a place where several factories are located or built to produce textile, paper products, electronic parts and chemical products.  

Steam Press was invented for printing of newspaper. Telegram is a system used for transmitting messages from a distance along a wire.

Electronic Age - The Electronic Age marked the beginning of modernization since Electronic equipment are more functional and reliable. Electronic refers to an object that has electronic components such as sensors or microchips which functions once it is connected to an electrical outlet.

What is the difference between Electronic Age and Industrial Age? Information Age - It is also labeled as the Computer Age or the New Age because it gave birth to new media and digital technology. It has upgraded what it can offer to consumers that it does not only make the consumers’ life functional but also comfortable.

Relationship between Traditional Media and New Media The choice of media is based on one’s needs, interests, and lifestyle as both can carry out their purpose of keeping the people informed and helping everyone to stay connected.

Roles and Functions of Media in a Democratic Society Democracy •

It comes from the Greek work demo meaning people and kratos meaning to rule.



In the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin(1851) written by Harriet Beecher Stowe have been banned as it expressed the abolition of slavery.



In the Philippines, our heroes during the Spanish period used pen names in order to criticize the Spanish.



Another is the Philippines’ 1986 and 2001 People Power revolutions perfectly show the importance of the role of media.

Selected Theories on Media and Information Media Richness Theory •

It was introduced by Richard I. Draft and Robert H. Lengel



Communication serves as a medium that can reproduce information.



According to this, personal communication methods, like texting and making video calls are generally effective that other forms of media as the desired message is sent directly to the receiver.

Information Processing Theory •

This suggest that humans process the information they receive instead of merely responding to the stimuli.



This theory is associated with the cognitive development approach in psychology.

Contingency Theory •

It was introduced by Joan Woodwards in 1958.



This theory argued about the influence of technology and other variables in organizations.



A variable can change the behavior and the structure of an organization in order to complete a task.

Media Naturalness Theory •

It was proposed by Nereu “Ned” Kock.



In this theory, it suggest that face-to-face communication is the most natural method of communication.



It stated that the farther the sender is from the receiver, the harder it is to process information and comprehend the message.

Media Synchronization Theory •

According to this, it is better if people who need to communicate are all present and available in real time. In this way, they will be able to note immediate feedback and responses since they are fully engaged in the conversation.



It emphasizes that communication involves two processes: the conveyance and convergence.

Channel Expansion Theory •

It was proposed by John Carlson and Robert Zmud.



It suggested that an individual chooses a type of media to use for communication based on his experience in handling that type of media alongside the person he needs to speak with and what their topic is all about....
