The Fashion of Joan Watson Paige Woolstenhulme 13 March 2016 Spoiler Alert Since the premiere of the show Elementary all the way back in September of 2012 we as viewers have become incredibly more comfortable with role reversal and adjustments to canon. It’s interesting to think of what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have thought when first viewing the pilot episode, aptly structured after A Study in Scarlet; t he first short written by Doyle featuring his iconic protagonist. Within a myriad of changes made, including to the era (present as opposed to Victorian), setting (New York City as opposed to London) and modes of communication (iPhones as opposed to electrical telegraphs), the most unusual to classic Doyle fans was the change in gender of the supporting role of Watson. Maybe it was an outspoken feminists idea to change John to Joan, or maybe it was simply a typo in the original script that stuck around and changed ideas. All we know as a fandom is that we are happy with the change. And with the fashion choices made as well. The recently flourishing interest in androgyny (indeterminate in sex, or rather a mix of both traditional male and female), or at least in the interest of fashion, has made this article quite easier to write. Joan Watson, an Asian-American surgeon turned Sober Companion turned consultant detective was seen in the first shot of the show sleeping in, jogging and working. These three actions would describe her personality pretty well if they had included her picking out her outfit for the day.

Numerous websites have thus been dedicated to seeing what Joan sports each week along her partner who can usually be seen in a suit with quirkily paired tie/sock patterns that give us something to look forward to, along with, ya know, the show itself.
