CHAPTER II THE KINDS OF VOCATION (WEEKS 3 & 4) OBJECTIVES: 1. To explain in their own words the different kinds of vocation 2. To reflect on each kind of vocation 3. To pray for the will of God in one’s life

Let’s get Started!

There are many different types of vocations in today’s society. The three significant vocations are: single life, married life, and religious life.

1. SINGLE LIFE Single life is one of the three types of vocation. It’s when a person/s are committed to being single. This gives them the opportunity to become closer to God, to love God, and serve others. People that are single, are free from the obligations to family. This makes single people more reliable to help and serve the Catholic Church, assist the needy, and care for themselves and others. By being free from obligations of community and family , they have the potential to enrich themselves personally, and can benefit humankind. Singles can become nuns, social workers and teachers. Singles possess patience, forgiveness, love and respect to live out their calling from God.

A. 4 THINGS GOD SAYS TO SINGLES 1.It is a gift from God. 2. Singleness has advantages. St. Paul mentions two advantages of singleness in 1 Corinthians 7: 1. Single people are spared the “troubles of marriage”. 2. Single people can devote themselves more fully to God’s work. 3. Singleness is hard. Single people are likely to face a lifelong battle with loneliness and sexual temptation. 4. Singleness is not permanent.

2. MARRIED LIFE A married person lives a vow of faithful love to a spouse through the sacrament of marriage. Husbands and wives share a self-giving, love-giving and life-giving relationship with their spouse, and are committed to helping their spouse to grow in human and Christian maturity. They seek to form a family, home, and are together as the first teachers of their children in Christian faith and values. Married people may serve in the Church in a number of different ways.

B. THE FOUR ATTITUDES TOWARDS MARRIAGE BY THE COUPLES 1. Mutuality. Mutuality in marriage implies regarding each other’s differences with respect and affording each other equally high integrity for the unique gifts each brings to the marriage. 2. Self-Acceptance. There must be a level of self-love and self-assurance in order to proclaim genuine and lasting love to another. 3. Other-Acceptance. There must be a genuine acceptance of the other, the whole person. 4. Openness to growth and change. Change happens. When we can embrace it, we can discover the growth possibilities that come with it within a marriage. These are the four corners of healthy marriage. It is important to recognize that these qualities imply conviction and are not just skills to learn. These are ideals worth pursuing for a lifetime of marriage.

3. RELIGIOUS LIFE A religious priests, brother or sister (nun) commits his or her life to sharing in the life and mission of their religious community. Religious priests, brothers and sisters embrace the call to poverty, chastity and obedience and nurture their call through a life of celibacy, faith, prayer and service. Religious priests, brothers and sisters serve in areas such as education, health care, parish, youth ministry, aged care, spirituality, pastoral ministry, social work, amongst the poor and as a contemplative, and many will serve as missionaries in other cultures. Depending on the religious order, they may dress in ‘normal’ clothes or in a habit. C. QUALITIES OF A GOOD PRIEST, BROTHERS AND SISTERS (NUNS) 1. A personal relationship with God as evidenced of prayer. 2. Love for the Catholic Church and its teachings. 3. Generosity. 4. Ability to work well with others. 5. Interest in serving people. 6. Respect for other people. 7. Normal social skills. 8. Capacity and desire to learn. 9. Healthy self-image. 10. Ability to spend time alone....
