Mora 1 Aimee Mora Professor Cheyenne Cummings SMT 312-04 September 5, 2018 How the Earth Was Made: The Ring of Fire The documentary How the Earth Was Made: The Ring of Fire, by the History channel, describes why and how the Ring of Fire is so dangerous. The Ring of Fire certainly inflicts fear as mass destruction of earthquake and volcanic activity claims lives and destroys habitats. Strangely people still continue to live near this area which holds 3 quarters of world’s volcanoes and 90% of earthquakes, which is crazy because why would anyone want to live near such a dangerous zone. Upon watching the documentary I found the authenticity of it to be genuine as the video made me feel more scared of earthquakes upon learning more about them, the information on volcanoes and earthquakes is actually beneficial to recent news on California, and the ideas discussed relate to some of the 5 elements discussed in class. When finishing the Ring of Fire I felt even more scared of earthquakes than I did before upon learning more about them. Earthquakes do tend to happen here in California but I have never experienced a big one, most of the earthquakes I’ve experienced were small and they still frightened me. So while watching the Ring of Fire I learned that earthquakes can be so powerful that they can lift the land out of the sea. This piece of information shocked me because if an earthquake is so powerful to do that I can’t imagine what else it can do. Earthquakes can be scary especially because we haven’t had a big one in California in a very long time. Rong-Gong Lin states that “scientists say it’s possible for Southern California to be hit by a magnitude 8.2 earthquake” (para 3). Knowing that it is possible for an earthquake this big to happen like the

Mora 2 ones in Ring of Fire is scary to me especially because Los Angeles would have the most destruction since San Andreas fault runs close by. The information of volcanoes and earthquakes presented in the Ring of Fire is actually beneficial to recent news on California. Since California lies on the volatile of Pacific Ring of Fire we are at high risk of earthquakes and volcanoes. California is known to also have violent volcanoes and from what I learned in the Ring of Fire these volcanoes must have blocky lava. As blocky lava is thick and makes it hard for things to move through so in the end leads to violent explosions. Oli Smith states that “ Leading US geologists have warned that California could be the next site of explosive volcanic eruptions, with three potential volcanoes at very high risk of blowing up” (para 1). This is recent news and we are at high risk right now. Although we can’t stop the volcanoes from erupting I feel that the Ring of Fire has provided us with beneficial information on earthquake eruptions. For example knowing the type of lava is evidence and key to knowing how explosive these volcanoes can be such as blocky lava. I feel that we should acquire more knowledge on how to prepare ourselves when that big earthquakes hits Cali. I feel like the ideas discussed in the documentary relate to some of the 5 elements discussed in class. Actually out of all the five elements I feel like only one related to the video and that is the element that hazards are predictable from scientific evaluation. For example, in the Ring of Fire scientists can map out where volcanoes are located as wherever there is a deep subduction trench there is also a volcano. But not only do subduction trenches reveal area of volcanoes but they also reveal the shape of the entire pacific plate. So by knowing the locations of these volcanoes more scientific research can be done and also people can know to stay away from these hazardous zones. Although there is a lack of data of probability scientists at least have equipment like GPS antennas to track the movement of plates around Ring of Fire.

Mora 3 In general I found the documentary to be genuine as it presented a lot of evidence and information on the subject of volcanoes and earthquakes. It got a reaction out of me as it made me fear earthquakes more, especially because in California we haven’t had one in a long time there’s bound to be a big one coming. It related the information of earthquakes and volcanoes to recent news in California as we are in threat of volcanic eruptions happening. But it also related the information to one of the 5 elements. The only thing the documentary lacked was personal advice like on what one should do or prepare for when an earthquake or volcanic eruption happens. Overall I would recommend this documentary so people can get a better understanding of earthquakes and volcanoes.
