The Six Step Pre-Referral Process Step 1: Initial Concern - The initial concern can be noticed by anyone (including parents) regarding the students performance - The concern is based on a consistence difference in behavior or academic performance over a period of time - Concern can be expressed informally or formally - There is a team formed - There is no specific timeline Step 2: Information Gathering - Teachers will list methods, strategies, behavior management, and other things that were implemented to help the student. - Parents notice behavior changes at home - The students skill level, background knowledge, and experiences inside and outside of school will be needed - School work and informational assessments are also needed - The team has 45 days from the signed consent form to gather the information and hold a meeting Step 3: Sharing Information and Team Discussion - At the meeting everyone gets assigned roles for the meeting (ie. note taking, time keeper, etc.) - They share all the information they have - They brainstorm techniques that can be implemented - Parents can ask questions and also suggest ideas, as well as bring information about the students home life - They also discuss students strengths, interests, talents, weaknesses, and show comparison to other students and their skills.
