THE SNOW OF KILIMANJARO 1. SUMMARY In "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," Ernest Hemingway presents the story of a writer at the end of his life. While on a safari in Africa, Harry, the protagonist, is scratched on the leg by a thorn, and the infection becomes gangrenous and eventually kills him. Where most of Hemingway's stories feature protagonists who speak little and reflect nothing at all about their motivations and inner lives, in this story, the main character "sees his life flash before his eyes" as he realizes that he is dying. Many readers have seen Harry as a self-portrait of Hemingway himself. The story is a gripping look at a man who is facing death and regretting many of the choices he has made in his life, as well as being a memorable glimpse inside the head of a writer who is reflecting on his craft and the demands it has made on him. 2. SETTING & PLACE a. The setting of "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" is the final afternoon and evening in the life of a writer named Harry, dying of gangrene in a camp near the edge of the Tanganyika plains country. b. The Tanganyika plains are situated in Africa, land of heat and light. This is the place Harry has chosen to find illumination for the darkness in his soul and inspirational warmth to melt his frozen talents. Ironically, Africa becomes his graveyard. c. The most important element in the setting is the contrast between the mountain and the plains. 3. CHARACTER a. Compton flies the plane that is meant to take Harry back to the city to save his life. He is confident and tries to make Harry feel better about his predicament. However, he exists only in Harry's dream. b. Harry Harry is the protagonist of the story. He is a writer and has had many experiences in Europe. He also very much enjoys big-game hunting. Whenthe story begins, Harry is suffering from gangrene in his leg and he is dying in the African backcountry while waiting for a plane to take him to the city c. Helen Helen, a major character, is Harry's wife. Also known as The Wife, she remains unnamed until the end of the story when a delirious Harry refers to her by her name as...
