The stanford prison experiment...

Description

Anthon Bjuvlid E18B Fråga 1 The Stanford Prison Experiment was a study in which a group of college students were asked to roleplay as prisoners or guards in a fake prison. The intention of the experiment was to measure what effects role-playing and various social expectations would have on behavior. This study was to be conducted over the course of 2 weeks however, the mistreatment of prisoners escalated to a point where main investigator Phlilip Zimbardo had to close down the experiment after six days.

Fråga 2 Philip Zimbardo and his colleagues wanted to see what impact being a prisoner or a prison guard had on a person. They then created the Stanford Prison Experiment, which went on to become one of the most well-known experiments ever conducted. The primary reason that Zimbardo wanted to conduct this experiment was to research the effect of power, rules, symbols and what norms were developed in a prison environment.

Fråga 3 In the interview the prisoners stated that it felt like an actual prison, they never thought about how it was just an experiment. Only difference was that the prison was run by researchers, and not the state.

Fråga 4 He took a role in the experiment, he made himself the superintendent of the prison, so when the parents of one of the research objects came and told Philip their concerns about their son’s sleep and how his psychological health was going downhill. But due to the fact that Philip had taken a role in the experiment, he didn’t care about their concerns but rather just asked if they didnät believe he could handle it. Which was a huge mistake according to Philip.

Fråga 5 Due to him playing a role in the study he got a clouded vision of the extremities the student’s behaviors went to, he didn’t see anything wrong with the study. However, in retrospect he realized his mistakes although he doesn’t regret doing the experiment as it gave very useful results. He never thought about stopping it because he didn’t see any danger of the experiment.

Fråga 6 After looking at that experiment for so long he got blind to the extreme behaviors that the students were doing, not until his wife told him off did he realize how blind he was to the experiment from just being normalized to the violence. If it wasn’t because of his wife’s strong reaction to the behavior it would have most likely lasted even longer.

Fråga 7 There is no more research of that kind allowed anymore, due to the extremity that the experiments went to during this time it was outlawed. Now the only research allowed basically is on paper research which is why an experiment like the Stanford prison study will never happen again as long as it is outlawed....
