The Things They Carried

The story The Things They Carried is about Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross led the people. The Vietnam War made them so afraid. They were called legs or grunts. Each member carried things that they needed and each member carried each different thing that wishes to survive during the war. It can be separated by 3 things. First of all, how Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and other people how they felt the war. Secondly, Henry Dobbins who is a machine gunner what he carried and how he felt during the war. Last is about Rat keily who is medic and how he felt.

Lieutenant named Jimmy Cross was the leader of the grunts during the Vietnam War. He was twenty-four years old. (156) Jim Cross is twenty-four years old. He carried the letters that Martha sent to him. The story says: he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her, but the letters were mostly chatty, elusive on the matter of love. (150) Jimmy Cross love him but Martha does not. Story says: At dusk, he would carefully return the letters to his rucksack. (151) He carried her letters during the war and it meant how Jimmy Cross loved her. Almost everyone humped photographs. In his wallet, Lieutenant Cross carried two photographs of Martha. The first was a Kodacolor snapshot signed Love, though he knew better. The second photograph had been clipped from the 1968 Mount Sebastian yearbook.(152) Lieutenant Cross carried two photographs of Martha. At night, sometimes, Lieutenant Cross wondered who had taken the picture, because he knew she had boyfriends, because he loved her so much.(152) In this sentence, Jimmy Cross loved Martha even though he knew Martha had

boyfriends. These photographs made jimmy Cross to endure during the Vietnam War. In the first week of April, before Lavender died, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross received a good- luck charm from Martha. It was a simple pebble.(154) Before grunts Lavender died, he received a pebble from Martha. This pebble made Jimmy Cross to imagine about Martha.

Henry Dobbins, who was a big man, carried extra rations; he was especially fond of canned peaches in heavy syrup over pound cake.(151) Henry Dobbins carried his girlfriend’s pantyhose wrapped around his neck as a comforter. (155) As a big man, therefore a machine gunner, Henry Dobbins carried the M-60, which weighed 23 pounds unloaded, but which was almost always loaded. In addition, Dobbins carried between 10 and 15 pounds of ammunition draped in belts across his chest and shoulders. (152-153) Henry Dobbins is a machine gunner and extra rations. Machine gunner is heavier than the other weapon. He carried between thirty three to forty five pounds. It is clear that it is not easy to hump it during the war During the Vietnam War, he carried his girlfriend’s pantyhose.

Rat Kelly carried comic books. (151) As a medic, Rat Kiley carried a canvas satchel filled with morphine and plasma and malaria tablets and surgical tape and comic books and all the things a medic must carry, including M&M’s for especially bad wounds, for a total weight of nearly 20 pounds. (152) Rat Kiley carried brandy and M&M’s candy. (155) Rat Keily is a medic and he likes M&M and comic books. He carried during the war. He has responsibility to treat soldiers during the war. As he is a medic, when Ted Lavender died, he was sure that Ted Lavender even though other soldier does not want to believe.

In conclusion, the story which is the things they carried is Lieutenant Jimmy Cross who is a grunt led the soldiers during the Vietnam War. In the story, there are some soldiers.

Jimmy Cross was a leader. Henry Dobbins was a machine gunner. Rat Keily was a medic. Each soldiers carried different things and it is different how they think about the Vietnam War. Jimmy Cross and Henry Dobbins carried the wish things as their friend’s picture, but Rat Keily did not. They learned through the Vietnam War and they had fear of death....
