Davao Fresh Market and Culinary Center The city of Davao prides itself of being a melting pot of cultures in Mindanao and various cultures bring forth various cuisines. With dishes ranging from the classic grilled native delicacies to exotic deserts and pastries, the local culinary pool is able to cater to various food lovers both native and foreign. This vast variety of local cuisines could be attributed to the abundance of natural food resource produced within the city. It would therefore be an advantage for the city if these cuisines and products could have a central venue for acquisition and presentation for the locals and tourists. This way these restaurants would also be able to ensure the freshness of the materials they serve. Not only would the city have an additional landmark and attraction for tourism, this central venue for the market and well known restaurants could also help strengthen the economic and agricultural state of the city via increased sales and demand for both raw materials and other related products. To start the study for a fresh market and culinary center for the city the existing local markets within the city should be considered. With thorough research and planning, one of these markets could be improved and expanded to provide the quality facilities and spaces necessary for a fresh market and culinary center. The main issue to be addressed in this research process could be the efficient integration of a marketplace to a huge culinary complex considering the proper space planning, traffic and workflow management, maintenance and the like within the facilities. There are also other factors regarding the socio-cultural behaviors of the users and aesthetics to be considered for the project. Such research could yield data, standards and innovations which could help in the further designs of markets and other related commercial spaces geared towards tourism and marketing. Existing markets in Davao City are the best candidate sites for the study. Example of such markets are the Matina Public Market, Bankerohan Public Market, Agdao Public Market and the Like.

Davao-Samal Port Renovation and Expansion The island garden city of Samal is home to the most popular resorts in the province of Davao del Sur. It is an island east of Davao City and is accessed via water transport specifically ferries and small transport boats. These boats are docked on a few wharves on the coast of Davao namely on Sasa and Magsaysay. These ports hold the only viable access to the island thus its participation in the Davao and Samal transport and tourism is crucial. Such transport facilities holds an important role in a city’s economy and tourism therefore they have to be given an ample amount of priority. Paying attention to the efficiency, comfort, maintenance and aesthetics of these ports would be the key factor in providing a well satisfying experience for both the locals and the visitors. Since there are existing ports in the city, it is imperative that the study should begin by the inspection of these existing ports. There should be a closer look on the facilities to know which ones need improvement and what kind of port facilities must be added to the port in order for it to provide quality services. Auxiliary facilities dedicated solely for the comfort and recreation of the users should also be considered for study to ensure that their travel and pre-travel experiences are satisfying. Incorporating sustainability and unique socio-cultural elements in the ports planning and design would provide a good leading for its improvement and expansion. These concepts could aid in providing efficiency and cultural relevance in the aspect of the port’s maintenance and its contribution to the city’s beautification. This research should produce data which could further be used in the city’s transport. The socio-cultural issues and preferences of the locals and tourists regarding the city’s transport facilities may emerge. Data and concepts in port maintenance and aesthetics may also arise from the study as they are important in the planning and design process of the facilities. Ports to be considered for renovation and expansion are the Sasa wharf and Magsaysay wharf with both ports actively contributing to the transport of local and foreign tourists to Samal island. The Samal Island Ferry terminal may also be considered for renovation and expansion being the sole receiver of ferries and boats for the city.

Mansaka Heritage Park and Resort The Mansaka tribe from the Compostella Valley Province of Davao Occidental are one of the thriving indigenous societies of the Davao region. Their name came from their language “Man” which means individual or originator and “Saka” which means to climb or to soar. They pride themselves to be the first men to climb the mountains of the Compostella Valley province. These people are a friendly tribe and they currently use their natural resources and for income by accommodating tourists both local and foreign. They let the visitors tour their quarters and they show the visitors the natural wonders of the mountains. One of such wonders is the Mainit hot and cold springs. It is a famous spot where hot and cold spring are located beside each other and this is also the most visited among their attractions. These tourist attractions however are still crude and they need a little polishing and additional facilities in order for the place to be called an official resort. Resort facilities for accommodation, transport and leisure are probably the greatest needs of the Mansaka resort. It is also necessary to highlight the natural wonders that they exhibit such as the forests, the springs and their river. The issue however is how to incorporate man-made structures to their location without disturbing the flora and fauna of the place. It is also crucial to consider the maintenance and waste disposal of the resort in order to minimize as much as possible the accumulation of solid waste within the natural habitat of the Mansaka. Despite these issues, the Mansaka tribe is still an interesting study because aside from the natural resources they hold, they also have a unique culture and with it comes a specific architecture unique to their own cultural practices and social interactions. Studying these cultures and architecture and integrating them with the design process for their resort could yield unique architecture concepts which could be applied not only to the resort but could be shared with other design parties and interests as well. Aside from the additional architectural data and design concepts which could emerge from this study, the socio-cultural aspect of the tribe and the users may also show significant data for the future designers and may even be used for anthropologic research as well....
