2 Abstract

Engineers have an important role in society. They design, create and innovate the world’s best and most useful technologies and objects. Without engineers the world would not be what is today. What makes engineers so brilliant is the theory they have learnt from the classes they took. An important concept all engineers in their circuit class is Thevenin’s equivalent circuit. Thevenin’s equivalent circuit is a circuit with a constant voltage source and a single series resistor that are known as Thevenin’s voltage and Thevenin’s resistance. In order to gain a greater understanding of Thevenin’s equivalent circuit, Students built two variations of the circuit and found the voltage across the load resistance along with the measured resistance in part one. In part two, student found various voltages and current along with the equivalent resistance. The results of this lab were the circuits and completed data tables.

Introduction and Objectives The purpose of this lab is for student to learn more about Thevenin’s equivalent circuit and the theory behind it. The concept that will be learned is Thevenin’s equivalent circuit and Thevenin’s theorem.

THEVENIN EQUIVALENT CIRCUIT Theory Thevenin’s theorem states that a circuit that has multiple voltages and resistances can be replaced by with one voltage in series along with a single resistance that is connected across the load. Thevenin’s theorem plays a huge role in the circuit analysis of power systems where it affects adjoining parts of the circuit. With that Thevenin’s equivalent circuit is a circuit with a constant voltage source and a single series resistor that are known as Thevenin’s voltage and Thevenin’s resistance. A simplified picture of it is pasted below.

Experimental Materials and Methods Materials     

Variable Power Supply NI Elvis Mk. II Resistors: 20Ω, 50Ω, 100Ω, 200Ω, 500Ω, 1kΩ. Wires NI ELVIS Software

Procedures Part 1 1. Create the circuit found in figure 2 of the lab guide using the variable power supply and NI ELVIS board to supply the VT. 2. Next set power to 6V DC. 3. Set RL to 20Ω and power on the variable power supply. 4. Record the voltage across RL using the digital multimeter. 5. After that change the RL values to 50Ω, 100Ω, 200Ω, 500Ω, and repeat the previous steps. Part 2 1. Create the circuit found in figure 2 of the lab guide and use the variable power supply and set it to 6 volts and measure everything it says to in the table.

Conclusion and Summary In this lab, students gained a greater knowledge of Thevenin’s theorem and Thevenin’s equivalent circuit by building it in class. Students learned that Thevenin’s equivalent circuit is a circuit with a constant voltage source and a single series resistor that are known as Thevenin’s voltage and Thevenin’s resistance. They also learned that Thevenin’s theorem states that a circuit
