Outcomes/Evaluation Correct diffuse goiter and thyroid cancer Post total throidectomy, client will need lifelong hormone replacement therapy High protein high carb diet prior to surgery
Potential Complications Hemorrhage Thyroid storm/crisis Airway obstruction Hypocalemia and tetany Nerve Damage

CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre: Explain the purpose of the throidectomy to the client the client should receive iodine for 10-14 days before surgery Intra: Support neck when performing deep breathing and coughing exercises Expect to have a neck incision covered with a dressing and possible drain Hoarseness and sore throat can occur Post: Keep client semi Fowler, deep breathing exercises q 30-60 minutes, keep emergency equitment at bedside
Client Education Support the neck while performing coughing exercises or changing positions Report incisional drainage, swelling, or redness which can indiate infection Report fever, increased restlessness, palpatations or chest pain
Nursing Interventions Maintain a patent airway Provide continuous cardiac monitoring Administer acetaminophen to decrease temperature
