Before this activity, I never used the Top Hat Organizer. I currently teach middle school science and have used Venn Diagrams to have students visualize the similarities and differences between two topics. Based on this activity, I believe that the Top Hat Organizer is a better tool to keep students organized and visualize the topics. Based on my research, I found out that Top Hat Organizers can be used to visually organize and structure information, while also determining connections, patterns, and relationships between the concepts (“The Hat Organizer”, 2015). When determining the similarities between formative and summative assessments, the Top Hat Organizer made it easier to create a structured list of points for each topic. With the points, I was able to shorten them enough for me to understand what they mean. I felt like this was easier to use than a Venn Diagram and will be easier to back as a reference. Summative and Formative assessments are essential for education and using this chart can easily represent the key components for each topic. Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit, quarter, semester, or school year whereas a formative assessment is given frequently throughout the year.

Summative assessments are based on portfolios, exams, or presentations. A formative assessment can be given by a journal entry, discussion, or reflection. Formative assessments also do not have to be graded, but a summative assessment must be graded. Both assessments can provide data on how students are performing and can aid with future lesson plans and activities. Reference
