Cultural Competence Reflection 

What does it mean to be a culturally competent educator? Include specific terms from your Topic 1 assignment, “Social Justice Key Terminology.” To me being a culturally competent educator means continuously educating myself on different cultures, this way I can celebrate the diversity of my students. It also means making sure all my students have equal accessibility to supplies and resources in my classroom. Being a culturally competent teacher means embracing any opportunities that arise to educate my students on biases, and how to use their positions in society to combat biases, so they can become culturally competent as well.

Where do you see yourself on the cultural competency continuum chart and why? Support your placement on the continuum chart with your position regarding specific controversial, culturallybased issues that affect K-12 education. On the cultural competence reflection chart, I would say that I am on a four. I still have room to grow, but I consider myself someone who strongly values diversity. I am a supporter of civil rights for all and social justice, even when it comes to topics that are outside of my own worldview. For example, I support LGBTQ rights and equality, and I think transgender students should be allowed to use the bathroom of the gender they identify as in schools.

What will it take for you to get to the next step or to deepen your cultural competence, including understanding your own personal bias, teaching in a diverse classroom, and implementing strategies for ensuring a safe and supportive classroom for all students? For me to be able to deepen my cultural competence I need to actively seek to have a deeper understanding of different cultures, rather than just a surface understanding. I need be honest with myself when considering my own bias both implicit and non-implicit, so that I can actively change how I respond to those biases and grow as an individual.

What are some specific research and readings, tools, resources, or training you might use to further your cultural competency as an educator? In deepening my cultural competence, I will seek to read diverse literature, literature is a major tool I can use to further my cultural competency; I will make efforts to read current research on diversityrelated issues. Other resources I can seek are conventions and conferences that are focused on cultural diversity in my area.

What will it look like to have cultural inclusivity in your future classroom? My culturally inclusive classroom will be full of diverse and engaging story books, any posters that are displayed will represent multiple races, I will also introduce my students to different music and foods from around the world, and I will create an overall atmosphere that supports acceptance to cultural diversity.

How will you ensure you are respecting students as individuals with differing personal backgrounds and various skills, abilities, perspectives, talents, and interests that do not align to your spiritual beliefs and moral values? When it comes to respecting students who have spiritual beliefs and moral values that do not align with my own, I will remember that my job as a Christian is to be an example of Christs love. I will give my students respect by showing them that I am interested in learning about their individual backgrounds, skills, abilities, perspectives, talents, and interests. This will show my students that I care.

Being a culturally competent is so important as and educator, because we play a role in shaping the next generation. I hope that the students who come through my classroom feel loved, and learn the importance of compassion and acceptance, through my actions and the classroom community that we will create together....
