Description

The case that caught attention the most was the Compton v. Addison case. In this case, the court was informed that a child with disabilities was refused special education services. It was brought to the attention of the court because of the failed evaluation of a child who was failing classes and falling years behind her classmates (Wright, 2011). Addison also suffered from a disabling form of anxiety which seemed to be rejected from the school district since there was no help offered. After years of constant struggle, in 2004-2005, Addison began the eleventh grade with a letter from her mother stating that she needed Addison to be assessed and an IEP meeting. After this note was given to the district, a student study team meeting was rescheduled multiple times and Addison was assessed by a school psychologist in December of 2004. After a nonverbal test of cognitive abilities, Addison scored an 82 which was a very low average and on the WoodcockJohnson-III, her academic skills were at a third to sixth grade level (Wright, 2011). In court, the school district stated that they did not refuse to evaluate the student but they neglected to act on the student’s struggling, which the court did not accept. It was decided that it was clear that the district ignored many red flags of the child’s disability and it showed that the district simply chose ignore the signs of Addison’s disabilities and not that they neglected to act on it (Wright, 2011). The court granted Addison and her mother’ wishes and refused the request of a second review of the case. My thoughts on this case is that the school district is ridiculous and they should have been unable to continue giving education because of Addison being ignored for years upon years when she just needed extra assistance with school material and stress. This case made me realize a lot of things because I would have never thought a school district would purposely ignore and refuse a child needed special help with their schooling, which is one of the most important

aspects of life. Reading about this case has affected my future role as a teacher because even though I already planned on always supporting my students and giving them any assistance that they may need, I plan on doing it even more now because I have realized how many children may have been rejected acceptance and assistance just like Addison. I will also never neglect a parent or guardians wishes for their child as well because it is important to have a strong and trusting parent-teacher relationship and they know what is best for their child. I will also make a promise to myself today that if there was a situation where my school district did not want to help a child with signs of disabilities, I will do it on my own and make sure that I leave that school district for the neglect of a child with needs after that child has moved on to the next grade level.
