Strongly Recommended: Print this page and try this exercise. Your result should be similar to what you see on page 4, number 6. 1

1. Note the contour interval for the map. In this case the contour interval is 20 meters 2. Label the contours using the information above.

3.Place the edge of a piece of paper along the transect A-C and label the ends of the transect on the paper.

2

4. Mark all the contours along the edge of the paper.

5. Label all the contour markings along the edge of the paper with elevations.

3

6. Label the vertical axis with values that span the elevations found along the transect: in this case 880 to 1000. Also, label the axis “Elevation (meters)”

4. Place the labeled edge of paper along the horizontal axis of the profile graph as shown below. Make sure the labeled points “A” and “C” align with the bottom left and bottom right corners of the graph respectively.

5. Plot the elevations along the transect as points on the graph.

6. Connect the dots with a smooth line to create your profile. Caution: the two highest points are adjacent to each other indicating a hilltop. That should be represented with a curved line that does not extend to the next interval (1010 ft.)
