Trier Social Stress Test What is the TSST? The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) is a laboratory procedure used to reliably induce stress in human research through social evaluative threat (Kirschbaum, 1993). How is the TSST conducted?
Procedure Saliva samples are collect before the test. P’s are asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation for a job interview. During the presentation judges observe the participant without comment. If the participant does not use the entire 5 minutes, they will ask him or her to continue until the 5 minutes are up. The presentation is followed by the mental arithmetic component, during which the participant is asked to count backwards from 1,022 in steps of 13. If they make a mistake, then they must start from the beginning. This lasts for around 5 minutes A second strand of saliva samples are collected at the end of the test.
