Lindy Whyte 2/21/10 English Compostion1 Types of Love Many people may not recognize the fact that they display different types of love with the people that they interact with daily. Love can be very confusing and plenty of people get their feelings mixed up, that is why it is important to explain the three types of love that people exhibit. The three types of love that people engage in during a relationship whether it is a lover or just a friend are philos, eros and agape love. Philos love is defined when two people become friends. It may start with something like having the same taste of soda, or having a dislike for an object. Some friends become best friend that socialize for the rest of someone’s life. All of this can start with having similar likes and dislikes, or similar opinions on something. The more time two people spend interacting, the closer they become and a bond forms between the two. That very specific bond is what makes up the Philos love. Those who take time to strengthen those bonds with one another, become best of friends. Best friends usually do just about anything together, they are the first to come and aid if the other is feeling down. Opinions of best friends play an important role in decisions the other person makes. Philos love exhibits loyalty to friends and to the community; however it also requires virtue, equality, and familiarity. Philos love can also be translated into, “love of the mind”. Eros love translates as “love of the body” and is a romantic love between two people. This usually occurs when a boy and a girl, start to have affections for each other. The affections

between the two are usually sensual or sexual. Some couples start off by being friends, and the closer they get the more they realize that the friendship they have between then is more than friendship. Other couples fall in love at first sight. When love at first sight occurs eros love emerges, and one or both people have an appreciation of beauty for the other. When couples are together, they are most likely going through the first stage of romantic love, which is dating. On a date couples usually go out together to eat at a nice restaurant, go to a movie, or just do something that they enjoy. Agape generally means pure, or the ideal type of love. As feelings develop between a couple, the two start to fall in love with each other. When this occurs usually they go into the stage of engagement. Engagement is the phase where couples are getting ready to be married. Being married is a choice a person makes in a relationship, that lets the other person know that they are going to love them and commit themselves to be with them for the rest of their lives. Agape love is released when this decision is ready to be made by one of the two in the couple. Agape love is a love without a condition, and it is all-consuming feelings for someone. Therefore, no matter what happens in their future, that one person would always love the other. That is how ‘love of the soul’ or agape love surfaces. The three types of love that people bring into play while engaging in a relationship whether it is a lover or just a friend are philos, eros and agape love. A perfect relationship is when all three ‘love of the mind’, ‘love of the body’ and ‘love of the soul’ are pieced together. However, most people today tend to put the eros love before anything else, which results a failure in the relationships....
