The ugly tourist summary...

Description

The Ugly Tourist "A tourist is an ugly human being"(Kincaid 199). This is how the author started the essay. The essay is written in a very aggressive style and was even rejected by the editor of the New Yorker because the essay was "too angry". Throughout the essay, she talks about all the bad things linking tourists. She uses words like "ugly", "alone", "unloved", to describe the tourists. In short, the whole essay is about how she thinks that the tourists are not appreciated by the people. This is a negative essay and to some extent discourages tourism. And the essay does not meet the course objective , so there is no point keeping this essay in the next edition of 50 Essays. The essay is written in second person "you", and explains about how it feels about being a tourist and how people see you. As the title suggests she uses the term "ugly" to describe how it is to be a tourist. And she uses this term: ugly many times throughout the essay. Words like unloved and unnoticed, alone and dismayed are used to express how a tourist feels. And the way the essay is written, it does not go in a flow. It looks like a big wall and the way it is presented, it breaks the concentration at points. The first line "The thing you have always suspected about yourself the minute you become a tourist is true: A tourist is an ugly human being" (Kincaid 199), is a good hook it makes reader want to read further, it catches the interest about what the writer means by an ugly human being. But as we go on reading, the essay gets all confusing in the middle. And the excessive use of parenthesis keeps breaking the flow and concentration while reading. She uses rhetorical techniques throughout the essay to present her views on the theme of the essay. Which I believe is "Becoming tourist means being ugly, being empty and stupid, like a piece of rubbish going here and there and the people around you are not going to like you". Which is a bad way to express how a tourists feel. As St. Augustine said ,"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page". There are various good things about being a tourist. Being able to travel to different

places is an amazing experience and meeting and communicating with people from different places is a very good way to learn various stuffs. And the people around the world as we see several times in news and shows, are very humble and kind. There is no way that they try making the tourists look or feel bad. There might be few bad cases but it does not mean it's the same every time. In some parts of the world like Nepal, India, Thailand and others, tourists are treated like gods. They are very well treated and people make sure they go back happily. In various parts of the world, tourism is a very important factor for economy. They work hard to make the tourism sites well maintained and help tourists around, making them feel home. There are several good things that a tourist experiences during traveling. All in all, we can clearly see that the writer is aggressively trying to say that being tourist is an ugly experience but we can find many people who disagree to that. The writing looks more like an angry note and no benefit can be made by the students by reading this so I highly recommend to change this chapter with something more supportive to the course.
