Description

Unethical Image

Caption: On May 2, 2005, Michael Yon took a dramatic photo of U.S. Army Major Mark Bieger cradling a wounded Iraqi girl. Major Bieger tried to bring the girl to an American hospital for treatment but she died on the helicopter ride over. This image was used in the Daily Record and was selected by TIME Magazine website viewers as the top photo of 2005. This Photo is unethical because it depicts a wounded child that ended up dying due to her injuries. I feel as though that is disrespectful. Using this image also only shows one sidewhat the bombing caused, and is biased. It creates a strong impression, and isn’t manipulated or dishonest, but under the circumstances of the event, it isn’t the proper image to use. While one may can see the image and say that the solider is helping her, putting the American solider in that scene could raise the ethical question- are the soldiers to blame for her injuries? This photo could lead to misinterpretations of the American soldiers because the caption didn’t include any information about the bombing and that her injuries were because of sharple from the explosion. This image does tell the news, and depict the result of a bombing, but it is unethical to include and a different image would be received better.

It also raises the ethical question that if the photographer had stopped and put their camera down, could they have done something to help not only this one victim depicted, but others in the surrounding area?...
