Unit 6 – Assignment 1 Functional Areas of Business Lezlie Rutty

One of the goals of anyone pursuing a business degree is to recognize that the business world is global, and there has to be an understanding and appreciation for cultural differences, in order for businesses to be successfully globally. Another goal is to understand the functional areas of business, such as accounting, human resources, marketing and information technology. Most businesses share the major functional areas in common, however it is important that businesses recognize the necessary functional areas, especially during the start-up stages. The two functional areas that will be addressed are human resources and marketing. These two areas are critical to the success of any business. Human Resources – Utilizing human resouces is the best way to reach business goals, and to create conditions within the bueinss that inspires innovation and team work. While human resources is undergoing dramatic changes, business leaders must understand how to effectively organize and manage this function. These changes are not limited to information technology and implementing new policies, but understanding the increasingly competitive environments that the business will face. There is a growing consensus that effective human capital is critical to an organization's success and that the HR function's focus must be more strategic. The human resources functional area includes, but is not limited to recruiting and hiring, training, payroll, compliance, and benefits. “It is the goal of the human resources department to

help all employees reach optimal performance and to utilize their full capacity and potential; to meet employees’ career expectations and development; to unify organizational plans and HR strategies and to create and maintain a corporate culture”. (Berma, 2014). Marketing – According to Moore & Rust (1999) the marketing function’s key contribution is to serve as a link between the customer and various processes within the firm . Therefore, it is expected that, as the marketing function develops knowledge and skills related to each of these connections, the value of the function within a business will increase. This functional area drives long-term success and growth and profitability in market shares. In an effort to ensure the business is visible to customers, it is important that various marketing platforms such as social media and traditional advertising are utilized to communicate with target customers for them to be able to know the business products and services. The marketing department within a busiiness is responsible for promoting the business to generate sales and to help the business grow, not only locally but globally. The marketing function involves creating various marketing strategy and planning marketing campaigns, while monitoring the business’s competitor’s activities. (Sevilla, 2015). Another functional area that’s very essential in business now-a-days is information technology (IT). Businesses have to the global age and the main force behind this change is information technology. The importance of globalization will continue to grow as companies move into the upcoming decades. With innovative information technologies to support them, organizations will have the capability to monitor, re-evaluate, modify and employ global business strategies that will meet this global challenge. IT has allowed businesses to keep up with the supply and demand as consumers want ti be able to obtain products and services almost

instantaneously. Just a few clicks on aany website allows the consumer to submit an order or request and the order and requests are sent to the company for processing. Another area of information technology that businesses have transitioned to is cloud based. This new technique drives IT efficiency while businesses gain competitive edge in the global market. The broader aspect of this function can supercharge any business with next generation data centers, storage and networking than runs throughout the business. IT allows users to access the business network remotely, by logging into cloud base technology. Being able to access certain business information can enable data-driven decision and create opportunities, while managing critical workload. The functional area that RPZ Marketing could have utilized during the merge is would be to implement and utilizing the IT function for training the Genaflex team on the social media platform. Training by utilizing IT would have been a more efficient way to train Genaflex teams in an effort to advance RPZ’s business goals. This would have been a proven learning method, combined with hands on training material to deliver a training platform that would have prepared the new team for the new social media platform. Forbes points out when busineses take the right step in training employees in this arena the business can produce dramatic benefits. If RPZ had offered social media training, this would have created a team who would have been equipped to represent RPZ and it’s customers. (Meister, 2012). When setting up a new business, the focus should be on designing the business organizational structure, which should include the necessary functional areas, according to the business size, industry and the business goals. A business structure that is poorly designed will result in being ineffective and non-productive. Therefore, in an effort to

have a well designed functional areas will produce efficient communication between managers and employees will result in a successful business.
