Student Name Anosha Zahid Unit 7: Forensic Science Lab Questions A Forensic Anthropologist Brings Closure for the "Disappeared" 1. Explain why Peccarelli returned to Guatemala and describe the goals his team are trying to accomplish. Peccarelli returned to Guatemala to look for the dead bodies that went missing during the Cold War. The goals his team are trying to accomplish is to find the missing dead bodies and identify them and give closure to their family members.

2. Explain how Peccerelli's team identifies the bodies they find. They go to the missing family’s house they ask them to give a piece of there DNA so they could compare it to the that of the dead body’s skeleton to identify it to see if it was the same as the DNA the family gave to them.

3. How did the identification of one body (Sergio) lead to the identification of five additional victims? The identification of one body (Sergio) lead to the identification of five additional victims because they had already extracted DNA from the first victim they knew the bones didn’t match which led them to believe that there was more than one victim.

4. Explain how DNA samples made it possible to identify victims found at Creompaz. The DNA samples made it possible to identify victims found at Creompaz because they had the DNA sample from the families which allowed them to identify the victims.

The Era of Personal DNA Testing Is Here 1. How can farmers personally test their pigs’ DNA? Farmers can contact the nearest DNA companies they have in their area and usually the companies send a sample DNA kit for farmers to collect the samples themselves and then send them back to the company for further analysis.

2. What are three ways the ability to copy DNA has changed our world?   

It gives us valuable information about humans and animals. It allows scientists to know if there’s something wrong with the person for example genetic disorders, diseases, mental disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, OCD, eating disorders, and many more. It allows doctors and scientists to make many different vaccines and medications based on the knowledge from the DNA.

3. How can personal DNA machines save human lives? Personal DNA machines can save human lives because they allow forensic scientists to test DNA anywhere at anytime without the use of a lab. It is really important because the forensic scientists might not have access to the labs or there’s a pandemic and they don’t have don’t have the proper equipment and they have to test a lot of people lab so by using the personal DNA machines they can essentially test people for many things from HIV or to the now popular Covid-19 in a save and secure way and limit the spread of disease. It is also more in reach of people than labs so it also makes it easier for people to go and get tested without worrying if its in their reach or not.

4. If you had access to a personal DNA machine, what would you analyze and why? I would analyze how efficient the machine and if it is better than normal labs. Because as stated above due the pandemic if people were to get tested we need to know whether or not the procedure can be done. And if it can how long does it take, is it efficient, and does it give the results quickly without error so people don’t have to do the same test over and over again....
