After being held captive for so long many of the African-Americans felt lost when they were freed so they still worked and did hard labor to survive. Black codes were also a thing during this time a black code is when it’s illegal for African-Americans to vote or carry a weapon they also weren't allowed to marry any white citizen or travel anywhere without a special permit even some of these codes made it to where they didn’t have the ability to own land....
