Introduction

A. Attention Getter: Have you ever witness a dance tradition or ritual? Like the Native Indians or the Africans? B. Relevance: From dancing around the fire, to dancing professionally on stage. Dancing has been in our lives since the early ages. We dance to express ourselves and for fitness. For the haka it was something different. It was to show their pride, strength and stability. When the haka is performed it is to show that they will never back down because it is a war dance. C. Credibility: I always love learning about different countries and their culture. I’m always fascinated by their land, food, clothing and their education system. I would compare it to our country and see where we differ and compare. I use to be a dancer myself. I performed and did recitals. I also enjoy watching different dance videos, whether it is hip-hop or a ritual. D. Thesis: To show where the Haka dance has originated, the meaning behind it and how it is used today. E. Preview: We will start off with a look of how the ritual dance began, then we will take a look of what it means, and lastly, look at how it is used for different kinds of events today. Transition To begin. We will start from where it all began. II. Body A. First the birth of the Haka Dance will be discussed. 1. In the New Zealand tourism guide, the origins of the haka are deeply rooted in the mists of time. It is a history rich in folklore and legend that reflects Maori heritage. 2. It all started when a chief named Tinirau had his womenfolk go and look for a

man that killed his pet whale. The woman did not what the man looked like, but they knew that he had uneven teeth. When they found the man, the woman performed the haka to get the man to smile, then later he was killed. 3. According to History of the All Black Haka, the haka is an ancient posture dance of the New Zealand Māori that was traditionally used to prepare a war party for battle. It was performed either on the battlefield prior to engagement with the enemy, or as the war party was leaving their own village en route to a battle. (show Video). This New Zealand teams has performed the Ka Mate haka. Transition: Now that we learned the history of the Haka, let us look at the meaning behind it. B. The symbolic meaning 1. The word "haka" simply means a dance, or a song accompanied by dance. 2. Overtime, the haka evolved and it came to be used for more than just battles. It became a way for communities to come together and it was a symbol for community and strength. This type of haka is called a ngeri haka. Unlike the peruperu, the ngeri does not use weapons, from “The Haka: What it means and Why it is performed. 3. You may be wondering what are they saying? Well they are saying: I die! I die! I live! I live! I die! I die! I live! I live! This is the hairy man .Who fetched the sun. And caused it to shine again. One upward step! Another upward step! An upward step, another… the sun shines!

Transition: Now lets see how it is used today A. Today 1. Today the haka is used at different events like a wedding, games, funerals and even for people who is leaving out of the country. 2. It is also performed in schools. a. One example is when a school teacher died in his sleep the school boys had put on the powerful performance for his remembrance. According to CNN it says, “As their teacher's hearse arrives onto the school grounds, the footage begins with silence, broken by fervent chanting, stamping feet and beating chests -- the customary gestures of the dance. The crowd of hundreds of students then separate, creating space for the hearse to pass through, as silence falls again”. 3. Another example is when it was performed at a wedding. The Bride's side of the family performed it and later during the dance the groom joined in. This shows that the family accepts the groom into the family and that they should love and

cherish him forever. Transition: Let’s summarize what we have learn today III.

Conclusion A. The haka dance has many meanings and have influenced many people across the world. The history of the Haka was it’s many stories, but the main one was the Sun God. The meaning behind is truly powerful because it shows it’s pride, strength and unity. Today the Haka tradition has evolved and is used for almost every event you can think of. The Haka is one of the most heavily dance performed. B. Each Haka has its own interpretations, but you have to make sure you are in union with your team-mates; the ahka should be a proper war cry. - Jonah Lomu
