Topic: Benefits of owning a pet General purpose: To Inform Specific purpose: To inform my audience of the three benefits that come with owning a pet Thesis: Owning a pet provides health benefits for people, including health, psychological and emotional improvements.

Introduction A. Attention-getter: From wild animals to domestic pets, animals have evolved for needs of humankind over time. To this day pets have Researchers have conducted several experiments to study animals’ effects on human behavior and function. B. Reason to listen: According to a 2017-2018 survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, sixty-eight percent of Americans own a pet (citation). C. Thesis statement: There are three major benefits of owning a pet. D. Credibility Statement: 1. My family has always had pets when I grew up, and when I was a Junior in high school I got my own cat. 2. I have done a lot of research on the topic to gain a better understanding of the benefits they have. E. Preview of main points: 1. First, I will describe how owning a pet has health benefits. 2. Second, I will explain how pets provide psychological benefits. 3. Finally, I will talk about how owning a pet has emotional benefits. II. There are three major benefits of owning a pet: health, psychological and emotional. A. One of the major assets that owning a pet provides are health benefits. 1. Owning a pet can lower humans blood pressure. a. According to Cherniack, studies have shown that adults who own a pet exercise more and participate in more leisure-time physical activity. 2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that pets decrease cholesterol levels.

Transition: Now that I have talked about two health benefits of that come with owning a pet, I will move on to the psychological benefits they provide. B. Pets provide psychological benefits to the owner. 1. Pets provide benefits to children with autism in a couple ways. a. Grandgeorge and Tordjman explained how kids with autism are seen to have greater social skills when growing up with a pet. b. A survey in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, said that 94% of the families that have pets see their kids strongly bonding with the animal. 2. Children with ADHD have been seen to receive benefits from beings around a pet. a. It is a way for children to release energy. b. Exercise increases oxygen-filled blood flow to the brain, resulting in an increased ability to concentrate.

Transition: Now that I have touched on the psychological benefits of owning a pet, I will talk the emotional side of it. 1. Pets can alleviate symptoms in adults with mental illness. a. According to Health Harvard, pets are a source of comfort, motivation and companionship to their owners, specifically those who may have anxiety or depression. b. Caring for a pet contributes to the feeling or purpose and achievement. 2. There are stress benefits that come with owning a pet. a. People feel a sense of comfort when being around a pet, if they are felling stressed in the moment. b. The Mental House Foundation says it is seen that people with Alzheimer’s have few anxious moments. III. Conclusion A. Review of main points: 1. First, I shared the health benefits of owning a pet. 2. Second, I described how owning a pet provides psychological benefits, in children especially. 3. Lastly, I talked about how can have emotional benefits on people. B. Restate Thesis: Owning a pet provides health benefits for people, including physical, psychological and emotional improvements Closure: Pets are our close companions because they provide love, comfort, safety, and friendship.
