Using the Catalog to search for books & other items

➔ To access items in Fordham’s library collection, select the “Library Catalog” tab above the search box. ➔ If you have a specific title or author in mind, search for that item directly in the appropriate search box. ➔ When you find items that interest you, remember the following features on the “Item Information” screen: Browse nearby items on shelf, Place Hold, and additional Category links. ➔ On the “Catalog Record” screen, experiment with searching under the subject heading links to find similar items.

Locating books inside Walsh Library ➔ The “Item Information” tab will list the campus library holdings, the call number, and the location of the book (Reference Area, Stacks, Special Collections, etc.). Clicking on the “Map it!” icon will show you how to find a book inside Walsh Library.

Searching the databases ➔ Research is a process - experiment with different keywords and subject terms to see what works. ➔ Know your search engine - they are all different and offer different search capabilities. ➔ Explore database tools - this may include Advanced Search options, suggestions of keywords, and tools to limit your search by language, geography, publication date, etc. ➔ Check the database to see if there is an option to to limit the results to scholarly articles and/or peer-reviewed journals only if that is your assignment. ➔ To browse list of databases by subject: Go to fordham.edu/library and select the Databases tab above the search box. Click on the link for “Browse by Subject”:

Using the Research Guide for this class

➔ Fordham librarians put together research guides in order to help students navigate the library’s resources on a particular subject. ➔ For the Urban Studies guide, go to the library’s website → Research Support tab → Research Guides → scroll to the bottom for VART 1101 - Urbanism (R05 & R06 with Prof. Szathmari. ◆ Databases to look for images and maps: ● ARTstor: https://fordham.libguides.com/ARTstor ● New York Public Library: https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/ ● OldNYC: https://www.oldnyc.org/ ● New York City Municipal Archives Online Gallery: http://nycma.lunaimaging.com/luna/servlet ● Museum of the City of New York Digital Collections: https://collections.mcny.org/ ● Digital Culture of Metropolitan New York: http://dcmny.org/content/about-digital-culture-metropolitan-new-york

What is OneSearch? ➔ Simultaneous search of library catalog, Fordham’s Digital Collections, and most databases. ➔ OneSearch can generate a lot of results, some of which are outside of Fordham’s library collection. For more targeted results, try searching a subject-specific database separately.

➔ Or, if you have a citation or specific journal you are interested in, go back to the library home page and search for the journal under the periodical search:

This will help you double-check whether or not Fordham owns a specific journal. Feel free to watch this video that breaks down how to search for periodicals & journals. Other Library Resources ➔ If you need to borrow a book from another institution, try InterLibrary Loan (ILL). Go to the ILLiad page and select the option for First Time Users.
