Description

Ana V. Torres EEC 3403 Assignment: Video analysis of IEP Meeting

Video 1:

Objective observations What I observed from this video is an IEP meeting conducted with parents. In the meeting with the parents, there was a teacher, a speech-language pathologist and the director of the school district. The main topic in this meeting was about how the Kennedy School is an excellent option for the child of the parents present in the meeting. Interpretation My interpretation is that the parents disagree with the staff. For the expression of the parent's faces and the choice of words they use, it shows that they are uncomfortable because with who they are having the meeting are not understanding the family needs or taking into consideration their concerns. The staff keeps saying the benefits that Kennedy School can provide to the child instead of considering the family priorities when making a decision. The energy in the environment was getting intense to the point that I felt that there lacking respect between each other. Conclusions My conclusion is that the parents at the end choose not to opt for the suggestion that the staff was giving to them. The parents make their point clear, and the staff had to respect their decision even though they were thinking the parents were making a mistake.

Video 2:

Objective observations I observed almost the same thing as the first video. An IEP meeting with a parent of a child with staff like the Director of special education for school district, a first-grade teacher, and the speech-language pathologist. Talking about a school called Kennedy School. Interpretation In this video, the environment feels more welcome, calming, and the staff was listening to the parent’s question, and the parents were open to new ideas or sources for their child. In other words, the staff was speaking to the parent in an understanding level. Also, the staff was providing extra information for parents to make their decision. The parent’s role looks like parent’s advocacy because they were telling the staff what they think their child needs. I noticed, too, from my observation of how the staff was willing to make accommodations. Also, the parents, together with the staff were finding solutions to their issues together. Conclusions They schedule and plan a follow-up meeting to discuss the final decision since the staffs have to look into the information the parents were asking....
