VIDEO CASE STUDY: FRUIT GUYS 1. When Chris started Fruit Guys in 1998, his leadership qualities included vision, value and a mission. Why was that not enough to prevent the problems his firm encountered in 2001? When they started the company in 1998, dotcom was blooming and they were lucky enough to get picked up by dotcom wave. Yet they did not realize that and in 2001, when the dotcom wave came to crash they were slammed down. This disaster helped him realize that to have the kind of firm that he desires required sound business practices. It would involve the selection of people who have the right attitude and skills. 2. In the early period of his firm, Chris realized that he had trained someone to become his competitor. How did that impact on his HR management? Chris had been a very trusting person. He almost assumed that having an interest in what the firm is doing means that the person is likely qualified. Eventually he recognised the need to expand his selection criteria. He included not only interest but also her qualifications. He also retained ownership & control over expansion into other geographic areas. 3. In selecting people for his executive team, Chris seeks not only qualified but also those who he can trust to reflect the company culture. Why is that especially important in a company that is growing and undergoing change? As an organization grows in size and locations, it is not possible for the CEO to be personally involved in all decision and operations everywhere. As a result, it can be useful to have people who cannot only make decisions on their own but also make the kind of decisions that would normally be in line with his values and objectives. 4. Chris and his sister have grown their organization internally thus far. From an HR perspective, would you recommend growth through M&A-mergers and acquisitions? It is possible that mergers and acquisitions might at first appear to be a way to quickly and profitably obtain new facilities and the needed workforce. However, the decision to do so should go beyond an analysis of financial analysis of financial statements. One major consideration is whether there is an organizational fit. For example, is there compatibility between the human resources of all organizations involved....
