Description

Week 5 ATI Video Case Study: Delegation

The key principles that a registered nurse should consider when delegating tasks to other healthcare personnel is the position and level of education they are in. If the nurse is asking an assistive personnel to educate the patient on how to take their medication, this is outside of their scope of practice and should not be completed by the assistive personnel. Three tasks a nurse can delegate to a licensed practical nurse can include, give oral, injected, or inhaled medications, change wound dressings after the nurse has done the first change, and insert and care for urinary catheters. Three tasks a nurse can assign to an assistive personnel can be, take the patients vital signs, help patients with bathing, grooming, and dressing, and they can help the patient with mobility assistance like repositioning, ambulation, and transfers. A nurse not using delegations can impact the patients care negatively. This can cause the patient to be unsafe and can expose the nurse to lawsuits as well. Delegating correctly can also help give the patient all the care needed and get all tasks done with the help of assistance. When the nurse over delegates, this can also cause negative impacts with staff members as it could like you are overdoing assigning tasks and not following the five rights of delegation. The five rights of delegation include, the right task, the right circumstance, the right person, the right directions and communication, and the right supervision and evaluation (ATI, 2019). This can cause an unorganized system and not keep the patients safety at interest.
