Nurse Verbal Therapeutic

She introduced herself and stating why she was there. This will make the pt. feel Comfortable. She also asked his name and date of birth to confirm he is the right patient. This shows some level of professionalism on the nurse and make the patient feel he is with the right person too. The nurse shows some concern by asking the pt. “if he is feeling any better now?”

She let the patient speak without interruption at some point. This shows some sign of respect. For the patient. Non-therapeutic

Alternate Response

Non verbal Therapeutic

She was not paying full attention to the pt.by asking the same question twice. She lacks empathy for the patient situation. She also gave false reassurance by telling the pt. not to worry, things will get better soon. She gave advice by telling the patient to think of something else but ignore the patients’ feelings. she brought personal experience into the conversation by saying “I felt the same way when I lost my father”. Rationale: Active listening is crucial when dealing with patient because, it makes them feel comfortable to express their feelings more. Giving false reassurance can also jeopardize the trust between the pt. and the nurse my response to the client would be: Pay full attention to what the client has to say, give more room tom open ended question, make eye contact during the conversation, lean toward him to show he is not alone at that moment. I will also show empathy by saying I am sorry for your loss. What coping techniques have you tried at this time? I did not think I see any therapeutic communication the nurse did.

Non-therapeutic She raises her eyebrows and looking away to some crucial part of the conversation instead of maintaining eye contact with the patient when he was expressing his feelings, she was speaking and showed disinterest in what the patient had to say.

Alternate Response

The nurse should have maintained eye contact, She should have leaned close to the patient when he was deeply expressing his feeling, touch the patient hand to show sign of empathy.
