Module 02 Assignment- ATI Video Case Study on Therapeutic Communication Purpose 1. Identify therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication techniques. 2. Identify congruency between verbal and non-verbal communication. 3. Document the conversation and label the parts of the conversation.

Course Competency 

Apply strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing practice when providing basic care and comfort for clients.

Instructions For this assignment, fill out the template provided directly after these instructions.

1. Listen to the ATI video case study called Therapeutic Communication. 2. Record the conversation, indicating the comments made by the nurse and client in the correct columns.

3. Observe and document the verbal and non-verbal communication. 4. Label the verbal and non-verbal communication as therapeutic or non-therapeutic. 5. Provide the rationale for each of the labels (therapeutic or non-therapeutic). 6. Indicate a statement or response that may have been more therapeutic for those believed to be barriers to communication.

7. At the conclusion of the conversation, write a paragraph indicating how you would feel if you were the client in this situation.

Verbal Therapeutic

Nurse Non-Therapeutic. To include therapeutic communication, active listening, silence, focusing, using open ended questions, clarification, exploring, paraphrasing, reflecting, providing leads, summarizing, acknowledgment, and the offering of self, have not been used in this video with this client.

Non-therapeutic

Nontherapeutic because the nurse has not asked the client any questions on what was wrong the with client and what he is experiencing. Instead, she says “are you feeling any better now”. She is asking direct questions that do not correspond do the clients needs. The nurse did not provide any type of help to the client as he still felt overwhelmed at the end. He felt he wasted his time with her and that he is still in a sad and depressed mood.

Alternate Response

A more therapeutic response: I understand many go

through this stage of getting very confused on what to do when life gets rough. Clarify for me what you think affects you the most at this moment knowing your job, your mom passing is the most difficult for you to bare. Non verbal Therapeutic

Non-Therapeutic. Listening to the patient non-verbally through eye contact, nodding and verbal encouraging phrases. Interaction between nurse and patient is caring, sincere, empathetic, and trustworthy. The nurse was not listening to the client but instead her body language said it all. Her arms crossed each other with no meaning to even have the eager to listen or understand the clients situation.

Non-therapeutic

Communication barriers such as, facial expression, tone of voice, and closed body language. All of these show a sense of “disapproval” that would make Mr. Toledo very nervous and not help his case at all. Therefore, there is no therapeutic relationship that she was carrying with him. The nurse was judgmental and offers false reassurance which is not the right thing to do. She gives advice of her own and does not have any empathy and that the clients’ concerns are thrown away and not understood as an important client. The lack of communication leaves the client in distress. The nurse was not asking any therapeutic questions to help the client talk.

Alternate Response

An alternate response would be: I suspect you might be having a bad time with your current situation. I know this is challenging and if you do not mind, please tell me more about your situation and how you are feeling at this very moment. I would ask questions that Mr. Toledo that are open ended for him to answer. Clarify questions with the client and make sure the nurse understands why he is feeling in a specific way and realize the situation the client is in.

1. At the conclusion of the conversation, write a paragraph indicating how you would feel if you were the client in this situation.

I would feel untrusted as a client and uncomfortable in many ways. A person speaks about their issues for a reason. When a Nurse is not using the right goals to reach the client’s needs, the client can feel the nurse is not interested in them, so they feel nervous or they get shy to continue taking about their issues. As a nurse and a healthcare worker, we must be empathetic to clients and understand what’s going on to find the best solution.
