Visual Motif Worksheet: Patterns and Analysis Patterns: Identify 2 scenes where the director draws our attention to the sentient computer. What do these scenes share in common in terms of the choices the filmmaker makes? What patterns emerge from the director’s choices for representing the computer? (i.e. cinematography, mise en scene, editing, etc.) First Scene 46:45- 47:30 Second Scene 56:47- 57:30 These scenes use close up shots, eye level shots, quick shots, medium shots, and POV, that all show us as viewers how the director wanted us to feel about Samantha. Both scenes incorporate these techniques in very similar ways. The first scene initial uses a close up on the Samantha phone looking device as Theodore is walking. This gives us as viewers a quick shot of Samantha before the camera changes into POV shots, that we assume are from Samantha. The reason we think this is because we were showed that quick close up. For the remainder of the scene, there are a bunch of quick shots, that jump between us seeing Theodore, or from Samantha’s POV. I also noticed a couple eye level shots that were from slightly from the side. It was mainly focused on Theodore, but the angle seems intentionally as I personally felt that he was talking to a real person on the beach, but we as viewers couldn’t see them due to the camera not being on them. The second scene uses a lot of the same techniques, with an initial eye level shot that gives off the same effect. As well as multiple close ups on Samantha. What I think makes this scene unique is that it focuses a lot on the physical device in which the OS is in. I think just like WOPR and 2001, the center camera piece is purposefully supposed to look like an eye.

Analysis: How do the patterns you’ve identified help portray the movie’s overall attitude toward/ideas about sentient computers? I think that the patterns in film techniques, used in both scenes, help us as viewers realize the Directors view about Samantha. I think he wants us to realize that the OS is more than an OS, and is actually human. This is seen through how these techniques personify her. It is also scene in how Theodore interacts with her....
