Iconicity: This image is an example of iconicity because it represents the event of WWII ending. It is an effective example because it sums up the joyous feeling that Americans felt the day that WWII came to an end.

Indexicality: This is an example of indexicality because it is able to document an event that happened/something that took place. This photo shows the Hindenburg disaster, a crash that ended the lives of 36 people. These passenger-carrying airships are no longer a thing after this crash. It is a good example because we are able to see the ship (which isn’t around anymore because of this crash) and we can see the crash happening, feel the emotions and sadness for all the lives lost, and understand what the crash scene looked like. It makes the scene feel real to people looking at the picture.

Syntactic Indeterminacy: This photo is a tad aggressive but is a good example of syntactic indeterminacy because it shows that pictures cannot show a causal relationship like words can. Without the sign, we would not be sure of what this photo was documenting. With the sign, we can be pretty sure that it is a protest against bombing for peace....
